Cicada Season

Cicada season has arrived. A hot, less humid day with sunflowers blooming in glory around the bird feeders. Birds are the best gardeners. The recent rains have made the whole area lush. We all know drought is always around the corner. We live on the border between east and west generally speaking. The Gulf to the southeast and the west Texas desert take turns blessing us, and there are pros and cons to both climates. I try to look on the bright side of each.

In the afternoon the small back porch is in the shade because it faces east, and today there is a breeze so I can tolerate sitting outside for a while, with a cold drink. I just saw my first blue jay of the season. Cardinals, titmice and white winged doves are around too.

The rock rose is closing up now but it will be in profusion in the morning. The orange Texas lantana is doing well. Turk’s cap and beebalm too.

I’ve hung some things on the clothesline that is tied to two trees. I’ll bring some more out soon. Things dry quickly in this heat.

The cicada chorus somehow doesn’t clash at all with the calls of the doves.

The breeze has abated and the mosquitoes are hovering so in I go.
